Why?
The Sierra Leone Alliance against hunger was formed by different Associations, NGO’s, and Civil Society groups all over the country with the aim of fighting against hunger. It strives to complement Government efforts by mobilizing more resources and enhancing direct access to food by the most needy through programme development and implementation, raising awareness, advocacy, and building capacity through training. The Alliance started in September 2004 under the supervision of Caritas Makeni and FAO. On 13th October during the WFD 2005 Celebration the Alliance was officially launched. Members of the SLAAH include FAO, ActionAid International - Sierra Leone, Civil Society, Women’s Organization, Farmers Group, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, the Minister of Development and Economic Planning, FAO Representative, USAID Country Co-ordinator and Representative from ENCISS. SLAAH’s main focus is bringing existing organizations together into an alliance with a common goal to improve conditions of rural communities in the areas of agricultural production, building markets and infrastructure. The alliance creates an opportunity for the constituency to speak with a unified voice, build political will and advocate for policy support in the fight against hunger and poverty. The alliance represents a new way of tapping and combining effort and resources at national level – ranging from highest levels of government to grassroots organizations to the individual beneficiaries themselves – building on what already exists, rather than creating a new entity.
